POKUMON
Algemene informatie:
The PokuMOn project (Performing arts Multimedia Dissemination) tackles the problems of online distribution and archiving of multimedia of performing arts and (classical) music. Recent scientific knowledge about copyrights, metadata and audio and video compression are linked to find pragmatic solutions for producers and receptive houses.
PokuMOn wants to establish a durable cooperation between different cultural partners to distribute the multimedia of one production or concert through multiple organizations to the general public. Multiple objectives are therefore taken into account within PokuMOn:
- Simplify the distribution and archiving of performing arts multimedia by formulating standards adapted to the sector and by developing tangible tools.
- Explore different modes of digital participation of performing arts (online, at school, via digital TV, …).
- Clarify copyrights of multimedia from cultural temples to authors and performers.
The research route has been clearly divided into seven work packages, each tackling a different piece of the puzzle. The starting point is a state of the art report tackling the archiving and dissemination of performing arts multimedia: What’s the status in Flanders? What’s the status abroad? What new tendencies should be considered? Furthermore the socio-scientific work package will pin-point the requirements of cultural organisations, of educational institutes and of providers of digital television.Two technological work packages further explore both national and international best practices. Research teams will look into the different audio-visual compression formats and container formats, as well as into diverse transcoding technologies (e.g. from High Definition television to television signals of a lower quality, notwithstanding the state of degradation of both sound and image). The three remaining work packages consist of a proof of concept, research on how to resolve copyright issues within the scope of performing arts multimedia, and the design of a multimedia metadata exchange model, thus having the tools to also convert the credits and other descriptive information.
Besides archiving and dissemination of actual productions, attention within this project will also be paid to the archiving and disclosure of show introductions, interviews with soloists/artists, programme brochures, reviews, etc. As these multimedia archiving and disclosure information streams could originate from different sources, a few specific challenges which will be studied as well, are implied:
- Keep descriptive metadata consistent across different media types;
- Synchronise presentations of different information streams;
- Generate links automatically across informations streams (eg. by using timestamps);
- Realize efficiënt/orderly user interfaces
To disclose in an efficiënt manner, one needs expertise in:
- Chosing the appropriate standards format for both input and output material;
- Annotating productions (use of metadata, design of an appropriate metadata model both semantic and syntactic);
- Coding and transcoding of multimedia information streams (not only of video, but also of audio, photo assets and textual information);
- Describing and enforced complying of rights in reference to these information streams;
- Requirements of the involved parters (both producing, receptive, facilitating and servicing partners, as end users).
