Outerthought receives Flemish government research grant for cloud-scale content management

The research activity of the Belgian software company Outerthought gets a serious boost from IWT - the Flemish agency for Innovation by Science and Technology, in collaboration with the Innovation Center East-Flanders and IBBT – MMLab - University of Ghent.

Since 6 years, Outerthought has been the producer of the successful open source CMS 'Daisy', which is in use with large and small organizations both locally and abroad for applications such as knowledge, website and document management. The success story of Daisy now gets a sequel with a research project on scalable and searchable storage using NOSQL technology, making Outerthought a innovation leader in this area.

WebMission: The Belgians Are Coming!

Taking advantage of this year's Google I/0 event (19-20/05, San Francisco), a new Webmission will be organized. This Webmission is aimed at Belgian entrepreneurs, journalists bloggers and Internet, mobile and tech enthusiasts, interested in promoting themselves in the US markets. This is a great opportunity to present Belgian startups and their products & services to the Silicon Valley audience, to extend networks, and to open up to new ideas.

The WebMission

The original WebMission was a grassroots effort by some Belgian startup to travel to San Francisco in May 2009 to attend conferences, share ideas, meet fellow entrepreneurs and pitch to VCs.

Its mission is to promote Belgian Web, Tech & Mobile entrepreneurship abroad, by increasing its visibility and international network.

A study on meal vouchers in the year 2015

NFC technology brings virtual vouchers at your fingertips

IBBT has completed a study on the possibilities of replacing paper vouchers such as meal vouchers, discount coupons and gift vouchers by an electronic alternative based on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. The research was conducted in collaboration with Clear2Pay/Integri, Keyware and Accor Services. For two years the partners analyzed different aspects of this electronic alternative such as: usability, legal aspects, security, applications and business model. The results of the so-called NFC Voucher study are promising and indicate that commercial implementation is feasible.

The current paper meal vouchers bring several disadvantages: not only is the printing and processing time-consuming and expensive, the ecological impact is not to be underestimated. NFC is a short range communication technology which enables wireless transaction of data between electronic devices. This technology enables consumers to pay at the cash desk with meal vouchers they received earlier via MMS on their NFC-enabled mobile phone.

Onze geschiedenis gedigitaliseerd en tot leven gewekt: Archipel

Boeken, documenten, voorwerpen, foto’s, voorstellingen, verhalen en ga zo maar door vormen de basis van ons geheugen. Zonder dit alles geen geschiedenis. Vandaar de noodzaak om voortdurend na te denken over manieren om al dit materiaal naar best vermogen te archiveren. Sedert enkele jaren is hier nog een dimensie bijgekomen: in een tijdperk waar computers en internet (ICT) alomtegenwoordig zijn, kan het proces van archivering niet meer los worden gezien van digitalisering. Het IBBT project BOM-Vlaanderen boog zich over de problematiek van bewaring en ontsluiting van multimediale data in Vlaanderen.

In het vervolgproject Archipel zullen universiteiten, erfgoedinstellingen, kunstenorganisaties en bedrijven de komende 2 jaar opnieuw samenwerken onder de vlag van IBBT. Dit keer om de mogelijkheid van een duurzame digitale archiefinfrastructuur voor Vlaanderen te bestuderen.

New ICON call 2010: now open

After several successful calls for ICON projects (Interdisciplinary Cooperative Research) in the past, IBBT now launches the ICON call 2010. ICON projects replace the former GBO projects. The ICON procedure is strongly geared to IWT’s R&D procedure. By means of one single application procedure with IBBT, all companies complying with the IWT conditions will be able to apply directly for IWT support for the ICON project.

The final deadline for the ICON project call 2010 is Monday, April 26, 2010 (at noon). The approval decision will follow in the autumn of 2010 and the approved projects could start as from January 1, 2011. The custom templates and guidelines are available at our project documents page.

ICON information session

If you are interested in collaborating in an ICON project with IBBT or you have specific questions about ICON, we kindly invite you to our ICON information session on March 23rd, 2010 at IBBT, from 10.00 until 12.00 o'clock. The IBBT program managers, Nico Verplancke and Birgit Morlion, will also be present during this info session to answer all your questions about ICON.

This workshop is relevant for all those responsible for research and development and IP-management in his/her organisation. Participation to this event is free of charge, however registration beforehand is necessary.

New European research projects

IBBT-IBCN-UGent collaborates in 5 new research projects within the European 7th framework programme (call 4).3 Integrated Projects fit within the topic “The Network of the Future”: OASE on ultra-high capacity multilayer transport networks, STRONGEST on multi-terabit Next-Generation Optical Network Architectures, and GEYSER on Optical Networks and dynamic Any-IT resource provisioning. Within “Networked Media and 3D Internet” IBBT-IBCN-UGent participates in the STREP (smaller, more focussed project) OCEAN on open content delivery framework. Finally, IBBT-IBCN-UGent is lead partner in the Coordination and Support action OSIRIS, which looks at strategies for open and sustainable ICT research infrastructures. These projects are running for 2 to 3 years.

For the 5th call of FP7, currently in the negotiation phase, IBBT-IBCN-UGent is invited to the negotiations for 4 STREPS, 3 IPs, and 1 Network of Excellence. These projects fit within the topics: “Future Internet experimental facility and experimentally-driven research”, “The Network of the Future”, and “The Network of the Future & ICT for Energy Efficiency”.

26 February 2010 – Friday Food @ IBBT-CUO-K.U. Leuven – Digimeter: ‘What’s your digital DNA?’

With Digimeter IBBT iLab.o wishes to look into the ‘demand-side’ of media use in Flanders. What kind of media do the Flemish people have at their disposal and how do they use them? To obtain this information, iLab.o questions the Flemish people twice a year, preferably in their natural habitat (on the internet, at the local market, in a pub…). The 2009 questionnaire resulted in some very surprising answers, totally rejecting some of the clichés of media usage. During this Friday Food panel managers Koen Vervoort and Tim Valaert will give you a fascinating insight in the Digimeter market research and will also tell you how you can benefit from it.

5 March 2010 – Closing event NFC Voucher @ IBBT-COSIC-K.U. Leuven – The future of paper vouchers and coupons

Are you using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology? Interested in learning more about the different aspects of this new technology? Want to see how we will use our meal vouchers within a couple of years? Then this event is not to be missed! This IBBT project, conducted with leading players in the payment industry Clear2Pay/Integri and KeyWare, analyzed the viability of NFC-based vouchers as an alternative for the popular paper-based meal vouchers, gift vouchers or discount coupons. During this closing event, we will reveal the results of our research effort and showcase a simulation of a potential future “NFC voucher scenario".

23 March 2010 – Closing event Transecare and Deus @ IBBT-Ghent – Linking living, care and ICT

This IBBT workshop wants to unite the views and concerns about living in the future society and the points of view concerning possible intelligent ICT services. Can these visions support each other? How can we better align the needs and trends in our future society? The workshop starts off with a guest speaker illustrating new visions concerning living and care from a local policy perspective. Afterwards the recent achievements of the IBBT - TranseCare project and the IBBT - Deus project will be demonstrated.

30 March 2010 – Closing event NextGenITS @ IBBT-Ghent – The usability of Intelligent Transport Systems

Are you working on mobility, transport or road safety? Then, this closing event is very relevant to you. Over the past 2 years, several prominent Belgian players have cooperated with IBBT on researching and developing demonstrations to show the usability and global state-of-the-art in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The results of the project will be demonstrated and it will advise in political and social important aspects such as traffic safety, road-tolling, etc.

New Study Program "Postgraduate Studies in ICT & Media Law"

Cross-media thinking in Crossover Lab Lowlands

Crossover Lab Lowlands is a five-day residential workshop aiming at developing innovative cross platform projects. Accompanied by a team of international experts, 25 participants from the Flemish and Dutch film, game, tv, entertainment, mobile and new media industry, as well as people from the dance, theater and audio/music sector will be immersed in interactive sessions and workshops. TV and film were the dominant media forces of the 20th century. The shifting media landscape of the 21st century provides us with a wide range of platforms, at times and places determined by the consumer. Organizations, companies and individuals will have to target more than one platform if they don’t want to risk a serious drop of their creative potential and growth.

The purpose of Crossover Lab Lowlands is to share an understanding of the rapidly changing media landscape, to develop a new interdisciplinary collaboration and to generate new ideas for projects.

Crossover Lab

Crossover Lab is a mix of creative people with different skills, standing at different moments in their careers and with diverse cultural backgrounds.

Crossover is an intensive, immersive, residential lab of five days with 25 individually selected participants and a small team of experienced mentors. Professionals from various sectors of the audio-visual industry receive the knowledge and necessary skills to develop concepts, prototypes and pilot projects in new media.

How to participate?

Crossover Lab Lowlands is looking for 25 xperienced and established professionals from Flanders and the Netherlands, with an eye for innovation. Target group is professionals active within:

Traditional audiovisual industry (playwrights, producers, directors, distributors, ...);
New / digital media sector(interactive designers, motion designers, creative web developers, online marketers, 3D artists, ...);
Theater, dance, sound / music industry.

BruCON Securtiy conference 2010: call for papers

BruCON is a 2-day Security and Hacking Conference, full of interesting presentations, workshops and security challenges. The organizing committee calls for papers and participation for the second edition of the conference, which will be held in Brussels (24 & 25 September 2010) at The Surfhouse.

BruCON is an open-minded gathering of people discussing computer security, privacy, and information technology. The conference tries to create bridges between the various actors active in computer security world, included but not limited to hackers, security professionals, security communities, non-profit organizations, CERTs, students, law enforcement agencies,.....
