Working with IBBT

Pioneer in demand-driven research

IBBT distinguishes itself from its peers by the demand-driven approach of its research activities, a logical differentiation given the applied and very dynamic nature of ICT research and development.

By bringing industry partners and research institutions together in innovation projects, IBBT has proven to bridge the gap between the fundamental research of universities and the direct needs of companies.

Depending on your particular objectives, IBBT determines the optimal way of working together for each project.

ICON: Cluster of complementary companies and organizations

For this type of research, IBBT brings together complementary companies and organizations.  Moreover, IBBT finances up to 50% of all research costs.

"IBBT finances up to 50% of all research costs."

The application and evaluation processes for interdisciplinary cooperation projects with IBBT companies, formerly known as GBO projects, have been reviewed and will henceforth be replaced by projects for Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research (ICON projects).

There is substantially no difference between these ICON projects and the GBO goals but the liaison with the IWT is being reinforced.  By means of one single application procedure with the IBBT, all companies complying with the IWT conditions will be able to apply directly for IWT support for the ICON project.  Don't hesitate to contact Helga.Deschrijver*ibbt.be if you have ideas  for new projects.

Contract research: Research assignments for a single company or organization

One or more IBBT competencies are deployed to carry out a specific research assignment for individual companies or organizations. The research is financed by the company in question, who also has exclusive ownership of the research results.

ISBO: Long-term explorative research

" Some research themes may not yet have a clearly defined market application."

Some research themes may not yet have a clearly defined market application. Because of their speculative nature, they hold certain risks for all parties involved and transcend the scope of typical research projects. For this type of research, IBBT sets up an Interdisciplinary Strategic Basic Research (ISBO) project.

Art&D: an interplay between art and research

When scientists join forces with creative people, it’s very likely that surprising results will come out. The IBBT Art&D program is meant to encourage fruitful and innovative cooperation between artists and researchers. Art&D offers one-year grants to artists (individuals or collectives) to carry out their artistic and ICT-related projects. Especially projects on video, image analysis and compression, 3D, networking, distributed software, metadata, security stand a chance to be selected. The grant covers, among others, the costs of the technological research that is being carried out in the framework of the project. The end result can be a performance or a prototype of an installation.

The IBBT Art&D program is meant to encourage fruitful and innovative cooperation between artists and researchers.

The theme for this year is “augmented cities”. We’re moving towards a digital society. An evolution that has an undeniable effect on the way people interact with each other, particularly in urban environments. Which role does art play in this context? That’s what Art&D projects are all about this year.

An overview of this year's projects:

  • Blink
  • Pavilion
  • When words...
  • iCatcher
  • Parvis des gentils
