Kusanagi

Kusanagi

The project aspires to offer an alternative to the specialized terminals currently used for the rendering of 2D and 3D images. Instead of using these terminals Kusanagi wants to make use of the network and high performance computing.

Kusanagi's Goals

Content > console

Kusanagi focuses on taking the added value away from the console and placing it with the content – an area Europe is strong in. In order to achieve this result, Kusanagi is taking into account two recent trends: the lowering costs of high performance computing and the availability of broadband networks.

High visual quality

Kusanagi aims to develop a scalable computing platform where 3D media content of high visual quality can be stored.

Multiple perspectives

Additionally, Kusanagi seeks to eliminate existing restrictions within the hardware in order to give users an experience with multiple perspectives.

Different locations

Finally, Kusanagi is working on an efficient streaming technology that would enable a faster and easier distribution of interactive content spread over several network technologies. Thanks to these developments users will be able to play games from different locations on a central server. The video stream is transferred via a network to the players. All they will need is a video player on their appliance.

United in Europe

In the long term the Kusanagi project will support the development of the European industry of videogames and professional imaging. Kusanagi is a collaborative effort between various companies and research institutions in France, Belgium and Sweden. The participants are Eureva, Barco, Darkworks, IBBT, Institut Telecom, Orange Labs and TellaSonera.

Kusanagi is part of Celtic – a European cluster program for research and development, aimed at increasing Europe’s competitiveness in telecommunications. Celtic includes R&D projects that focus on short-term as well as long-term projects.
