This project aims at the dynamic adaptation of traffic management systems to the ever-changing road circumstances, like road works, traffic diversions, emergency clearances etc. For that purpose we must conduct important innovative interventions in the different links of a traffic management value chain: detection, network & communication, data processing and signalisation.
This all becomes possible due to the end-to-end approach within the FLEXSYS project. In a proof of concept demonstrator an autonomous FLEXSYS system will be functioning, from traffic camera till variable traffic panels, usable at road works, traffic diversions, emergency clearances.
With FLEXSYS a new market segment is explored for intelligent traffic management. Also for local governments, police departments, shopping centra and companies responsible for the indication of road works, it becomes now possible to control traffic situations.
On each link of the traffic management value chain, we will have to realize important innovations:
Collecting traffic data by means of autonomous and intelligent detection
Detectors as intelligent video cameras and radars with wireless communication only transmit relevant traffic data. New functionality can be added remotely.
From traffic data to traffic information
Data quality is of utmost importance. By means of several techniques the quality of the data as produced by the sensors will be improved. The system will be optimized for mobile traffic applications. Safety, adaptability and reliability will be maximized. Because of this a flexible communications architecture will be provided, ensuring both the link towards the central traffic management as towards local systems.
Define the traffic control strategy
Traffic models are used to process traffic data into useful traffic information. New models that can foresee the dynamics of traffic will be developed.
Signalling - Control of actuators
The generated traffic information can be applied for the guidance and control of the traffic, but also for informing the driver by means of variable traffic boards and panels. Several of these applications will be demonstrated within the framework of the project. Different of these applications have a positive impact on the road safety and driving comfort.
