Why?

The organization of healthcare delivery is closely being looked at worldwide. Rapidly ageing of populations, pressure on the budgets for healthcare delivery and the fast technological evolution will be the drivers to improve efficiency. Past investments were fragmented and provided only solutions with a limited view on patient information, even mostly limited to a single healthcare provider. If shared with the immediate involved providers, it typically covers a single episode of care only.

This research project's objective is to supply a basic answer to the above. It will create a platform to share information which is now available only in the isolated silos and will span episodes. As such, all information can be made available at the time and place it is required and authorized. In addition, a lifetime view will be obtained. This means to be one of the enablers to make the healthcare approach evolve from provider-centric towards patient-centric.

Demonstrators as a proof of concept

Outcomes of the basic and applied research will be applied in the construction of demonstrators. Several technologies for information exchange will be used. Unstructured documents will be parsed and analysed to enrich the meta-data with coded elements. This will significantly ease the retrieval of the appropriate information. Realization and proof of concept will take place in an academic-clinical environment.

The net value

Step-by-step, isolated and fragmented information will be disclosed to enable the improvement of the healthcare delivery process.
As the consortium opts for a demonstrator that is based on emerging international standards, it is obvious that major results can be easily shared with the other healthcare actors. It provides a potential basis to improve the quality and the effectiveness of the healthcare delivery in Flanders. This will be in favour of the government, the publicly maintained healthcare institutions and last but not least in favour of the residents-patients.
