Application domains
IBBT wants to be part of a broader societal project for Flanders and Europe. From the start we have been a demand-driven institute, building our research strategy on the needs that we detect in society. However, it is impossible to respond to all needs all the time. A coherent and focused strategy is required, so that we are able to leverage the know-how that is present at the institute and build up expertise in selected fields. This is why our research strategy has always been based on a number of themes. For the current strategy period we have redefined our application domains into five closely related areas, each of which figures prominently in the national and European innovation agendas:
Culture & Media
Digitizing media productions and audiovisual archives opens up the past, in both sound and vision, for a large audience. New technology for more creativity!
Healthy Society
The key to accessible and efficient health care lies in the cross-fertilization between research, technology and health care itself.
Sustainable Mobility
Looking for a modern mobility system that allows everyone to travel how and anywhere they want.
Green ICT
ICT can drive sustainable development by reducing our ecological ICT footprint (Green ICT) and through the use of ICT solutions to reduce that of other processes (ICT for Green).
Social & Secure ICT
IBBT’s focus on secure ICT is completely in line with Europe’s digital agenda which states that Europeans will not embrace technology they do not trust - the digital age is neither "big brother" nor "cyber wild west".
