Bridging the gap between Quality of Service and Quality of Experience
Quality of Service and Quality of Experience are undoubtedly key concepts within today’s innovation development process. Similarly, both concepts are crucial for the (user) research, which aims to support and drive this process. In practice however, both concepts are still often confused.

Archives in movement: the unlocking of digital audio visual collections from a users perspective
This project focuses on the preservation, and especially on the disclosure of digital cultural heritage of Flemish and Dutch broadcast stations, with a focus on imagery. With this choice they choose for a digital 'return': at this time already a large number of broadcasters save their archival material digitally.

Categorizing Video Images from Atomium to Zaanse Schans
Images are an essential part of our culture. Thanks to digitization and other technological innovations it is easier to distribute images. The research project Canon Image wants to map out 'typical' images from the Flemish and Dutch culture, store them into a database and make that database easily searchable. Flemish researchers focus on listing buildings, such as the Atomium, Louvain’s town hall or the Cathedral in Antwerp, while their Dutch counterparts focus on typical landscapes or scenes like the cheese market in Alkmaar and the Dam in Amsterdam.

Topic and Speaker Tracking in Broadcast Archives
This project researches expertise and technology needed to quickly and easily search multimedia archives of radio and television in Flanders and the Netherlands. It focuses on the recovery of fragments on a specific topic or a speaker. For instances, recall the speeches of President Obama or anything said about the Oosterweelverbinding, regardless of the speaker. For both purposes, it is necessary for the programs (news, documentaries, interviews ...) to be classified by subject and speaker. In this way, the material is easily searchable.

Digital Archiving and Hidden Information for the Control of Intellectual Propery Rights
More and more material from archives is made available online in large databases. This among other things to reduce the physical storage, to have a fast access and to make searching easier. While splendid for users who can quickly and easily access the requested material, however, they often forget these materials contain intellectual property rights. Da Vinci aimes at clearly identifying the legal aspects of Digital Rights Management (DRM) and technical aspects of Intellectual Property Management & Protection (IPMP) and at offering solutions in this context.

CHF
CHF Disease Management
Healthcare spending on chronic disease conditions is skyrocketing. In many countries, including Belgium, the expenses for the most important chronic diseases comprise over 75% of the total public health budget. In Belgium, this means a cost in the order of 15billion Euro, on a total of about 20 billion Euro. Within the chronic diseases, the cardiovascular group is one of the most important ones (beside diabetes, chronic lung diseases etc.). Within the group chronic cardiovascular diseases, Congestive Heart Failure is probably the largest. Heart failure means an impaired pump function of the heart. CHF typically follows an acute myocardial infarctus, yet can also be caused by other conditions. The goal of this project is to apply ICT in order to provide an innovative solution for truly integrated patient-centric care for CHF.

Healthcare professional’s collaboration Space
The focus of this project is a common patient centric, community centric healthcare IT platform that is used by hospitals, general practitioners and pharmacists and that addresses the needs of the next generation clinical applications, which focus on collaboration and decision support. Furthermore it absorbs the advances of the innovations that come with Web2.0.

NextGenITS
Next Generation ITS
This project proposal reflects the intention of some of the most prominent players in the Belgian ICT sector to cooperate with research institutes and governments to develop and demonstrate a number of ITS services (ITS: Intelligent Transport Services).
The following services will be demonstrated: e-call, traffic information, intelligent speed adaptation, road charging and cooperative vehicle systems. These services which have either or both a big social and commercial potential will be demonstrated as a preparation for market introduction through public-private partnerships.

Video Content Analysis for Tunnel Surveillance
Tunnel security and surveillance has become a very important topic in traffic business. Some severe accidents in recent years have certainly contributed to this trend. A situation where tunnel operators are particularly on the alert is when trucks carrying dangerous goods enter the tunnel. When such a vehicle catches fire inside the tunnel the consequences can be devastating. Most tunnel fires are caused by trucks of which the mechanical brakes are blocked and catch fire due to the heat.

Web/Telco/Enterprise beyond x2.0
Along with Web2.0, a new paradigm came for service development on the Web. Internet mashups promise a short cycle for service development relying on reuse of existent Web services and software, useable by domain experts or even end-users rather than IT experts. Underpinning technologies are: RSS, ATOM, AJAX, JSON, REST, SOAP.
