This means that we must take the law on privacy into consideration. For media specialist and internet pioneer Jo Caudron, it is very doubtful that with the evolution of the new media, we can simply assume that the (privacy)laws are known by every citizen.


On December 19 EMSOC, the research consortium that studies ‘user empowerment’ in media culture, brings together experts from various disciplines at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB): Jo Caudron (Dear Media), Paul De Hert (LSTS VUB), William Debeuckelaere (CBPL Privacy Commission), Dominique Deckmyn (De Standaard) Ike Picone (IBBT-SMIT VUB), Bart Lombaerts (Media Marketing). Moderator is Jo Pierson (IBBT-SMIT VUB - EMSOC promoter).
 
They will exchange views on questions like:
 • To what extent the current legislation on privacy is applicable and sufficiently known among users of social media?
 • Can we be punished for violating rules that we are not sufficiently aware of?
 • What role is played by legislation, education and policy makers to clarify this issue?
 • Should citizens be able to charge other road users with speeding and other offenses?
 • Should social media be taken seriously, or is it just a fringe phenomenon?

The debate takes place at 19:0 pm in Auditorium QD (entrance 13, building Q).

Thanks to the financial support of Alcatel-Lucent Bell, the Research Foundation – Flanders and Fond de la Recherche Scientifique - FNRS will be able to award an annual scientific prize in recognition of a PhD thesis on an original study concerning information and communication technology, concepts and/or applications.

 

IBM Belgium voor Informatica 2012

Thanks to IBM Belgium, the FWO is able to award an annual Scientific Prize IBM Belgium for Informatics in recognition of the best doctoral thesis to have made an original contribution to informatics or its application.

 

The candidacies for both prizes must be submitted before 1 March 2012!

The network was established in November 2006, under the Finnish EU Presidency. It is constantly and gradually being expanded with new members. Today, 274 Living Labs are part of this network.

Living Labs are test and development environments in a realistic context in which users and developers collaborate. They work together on:
 • New applications development
 • New habits, behaviour, and detection of new market opportunities
 • Experiments performed in a realistic environment
 • Evaluation of new concepts, products and services
