TEDxKids Brussels: technology versus education

Written by IBBT on Monday 06 June 2011

Last Wednesday 1st of June the TEDx Kids event took place in Brussels. More than 370 adults and 56 kids were present at this unique event.
It was the perfect combination of workshops, speakers and demos.

The adults as well as the kids were given food for thought. There were about 16 speakers that all got 18 minutes to tell something about their particular subject.

While the parents were mentally stimulated the kids were physically put to work.

They got the opportunity to create robots out of a tooth brush, make their own chair, compose own music etc. The theme throughout this event was technology and kids.

Alyson Schafer came to talk about how to deal with kids and how to raise them in these times. Kids get smarter and smarter and that demands a different approach.
The fact that technology does not make this world worse is something Alyson Schafer and Gabe Zicherman agree about. He came to mostly talk about games and what the positive result could be of games being further integrated in our daily lives.

Further we also saw a demo of brain-computer interfaces that make it possible to control games and objects with your brain and also a new way of teaching was explained to us.

During the breaks the visiters had the opportunity to visit a number of stands.

IBBT was there with a stand also! We were there with two demos: the PING-game and the AudioCubes of Percussa.

These AudioCubes had a lot of success: a lot of adults and kids wanted to discover what the colourful cubes were all about.

To put it briefly we can say that the event was successful and it gave a lot of innovative insights. It was really worth the while!

On June 11 in Ghent another TEDx event takes place at the Vlerick school. Be there!
