Professor Jo Pierson from the VUB is one of the co-editors of Peter Lang’s new book on new media and their users. The book discusses the rise of ‘social media’ and the consequences on the ICT users in various European countries.
Recent developments in new media have led to the rise of what has become known as 'social media'. The shift towards mass self-communication has lowered the technological thresholds for everyday users to connect and to become 'producers' in media life.
However, the question is to what extent users interacting in this ecosystem are empowered - and not disempowered - to express their creativity and concerns and to obtain a prominent role in new media design and innovation. (synopsis ‘New Media Technologies and User Empowerment’ by Peter Lang)
Peter Lang published 'New Media Technologies and User Empowerment' (edited by a.o Jo Pierson – IBBT-SMIT-VUB). The book is based on interdisciplinary research and offers innovative insights based on state-of-the-art academic and industry-driven ICT user research in various European countries.
This work will appeal to post-graduate students and researchers in the field of media and communication studies, social studies of technology, digital media marketing and other domains that investigate the mutual relationship between new media technologies and society.
