Brussels, June 28 2010 - The Board of Directors of the FWO, has announced the five laureates of the FWO Excellence Awards 2010. Every five years - hence its former name "Five-year Awards' - an international jury awards outstanding scientists with an amount of 100,000 euros for their research careers. These prices are considered the " Flemish Nobel Prizes”.
The prestigious FWO Excellence Awards are awarded in the five major science fields. Researchers cannot candidate himself, but must be nominated by colleagues. An independent international jury of top researchers examines the nominations and select one winner for each domain.
Prof. Bart De Moor sees as a laureate, of the Dr. de Leeuw Damry-bourlart 2010 Prize in Applied Science, his research career awarded with this special prize.
Bart De Moor is Professor of Electrical Engineering at KULeuven. He is a pioneer in the development of mathematical and numerical methods and their application in various scientific problems, including in system control and identification, medical diagnosis, bioinformatics and systems biology. His work affected the industrial and social society directly and significantly. Professor De Moor is also known for his dedication to science promotion in many layers of our society.
The formal presentation of these awards will take place at the Concert Noble in Brussels on November 23 2010, together with the presentation of the "Prix d'Excellence du FNRS". The prize consists of a cash prize, along with a unique piece of art which was especially designed for this occasion by sculptor Tom Frantzen.
