Broadband on the train

There´s good news for commuters. Travelling by train is about to become much more pleasant and productive. IBBT just finished a research project mapping the technical and economic opportunities of broadband Internet on the train. The results were presented on 18 June.

Internet on the train is nothing new. Various domestic and foreign rail systems include the service. But in most cases, it does not provide broadband Internet or a continuous, reliable connection. So, no online gaming during morning rush hours or video conferencing during an extended train journey yet.

Looking for a continuous Internet connection

This is about to change. The IBBT Tr@ins project studied the technological possibilities for guaranteeing a continuous Internet connection, even in tunnels and underground railway stations. This is only feasible through a combination of various technologies such as satellite connection and wireless LAN access points alongside the railway tracks. The research team has developed a model to seamlessly switch between the various technologies without the users even being aware of the shifting source of their signal.

Who wants it and who will pay?

The researchers did not just focus on the technologies. They also conducted an elaborate survey among train travellers to assess the users´ genuine needs and expectations. They even asked employers whether they would be willing to cover part of the subscription fee. All interested parties are thus presented with a business case that balances costs and potential revenues.
